Cēsu alus plants 1,000 new spruces, compensating annual volume of paper used for beer labels

Latvia’s largest brewery and non-alcoholic beverage production company Cēsu alus compensates amount of paper used for glass bottles throughout the year by planting 1,000 young trees in the forests of Latvia’s in the Lādezers area of Limbaži region. Thus, the company plans to pay attention to reducing the impact of the production process on the environment.

The new spruce forest will make up for the amount of paper used for the labels of glass bottles of the Cēsu Premium beer brand produced within one year. The company plans to continue the tradition of planting and greening every year.

“We, the Cēsu alus team, compensate the amount of paper used for Cēsu Premium beer labels during the year by planting 1,000 new trees. We want to make it an annual tradition. The process of producing beer and beverages consumes natural resources and we are constantly developing ways to minimise the environmental impact of our activities in terms of sustainable implementation of business and processes. This is the promise of a better future for future generations,” emphasizes Eva Sietiņsone, Chairman of the Board of Cēsu Alus.

“A responsible approach to environmental issues has always been at the core of the PATA Group’s operations. We are truly pleased that more and more companies in Latvia are assessing the impact of their activities on the environment. Cēsu alus’ Better Future initiative is a good example of this. We are a responsible forest owner and will ensure that 1,000 spruces planted by the employees of Cēsu alus grow into a healthy forest,” says Andris Krastins, Manager of JSC PATA Strenči.

Thinking about the environment, Cēsu alus uses packaging that consists of 100% recyclable materials: glass, cardboard, aluminum and plastic. At the same time, 50% of the glass bottles in circulation are returned for reuse, which saves resources that would be spent on the production of new bottles and glass recycling. In addition, the company is involved in the creation of a national deposit system that will be introduced in 2022 to reduce waste volumes and ensure efficient collection and recycling of beverage packaging.

The company is committed to achieving CO2 neutrality in the production process by 2025, as well as reducing the amount of paper used in the office by 20%. The company’s sustainable development objectives include both the cleaning of forests and the planting of young stands.
