Cēsu alus, the largest brewery producing beer in Latvia, has created a new beer brand – Senlatvju alus. As the celebration of Latvia’s 100^th anniversary approaches, beer connoisseurs are offered new types of beer, and treasures of nature found in Latvia are used to highlight their taste.

Senlatviju alus is a lager type light beer, and there are three different variations available now. Each of them has its own special taste, and its character is noted in the name of each type – meadowsweet, juniper and lingonberry. The aroma and taste of special malts in the Lingonberry beer combine perfectly with the bittersweetness of the berries – this beer has a characteristic deep colour and a distinctive density. The extract of a meadowsweet in the Meadowsweet beer makes the aroma of the beer slightly honeyed, and combined with the bitterness of hops creates a pleasantly balanced taste. In the third, Juniper beer, one can sense the aroma of juniper in the details of the taste of this light beer. Juniper, mentioned in the ancient beer recipes, gives this beer zesty bitterness.

The designs of the labels of Senlatvju alus are created using Latvian power symbols, which are very popular today. Each beer is dedicated to one of the ancient Latvian power symbols – Māra’s wave, sign of the Sun and Jumis. The descriptions of these signs are included in the designs of the labels.

Searching for new tastes, we have turned to our own traditional Latvian plants and berries, which give different taste details to each type of beer. Honouring the 100^th anniversary of Latvia, we have chosen to use ancient Latvian power symbols in the design, therefore encouraging patriotism and strengthening Latvian spirit.”

The total amount of investments used to create the new beer recipes is 70 000 euros.
